Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is pushing for the development of tree parks and beach forests within the metropolis to mitigate the impact of climate change and promote sustainability.
These are among the sustainable projects under Treñas' roadmap for inclusive development, WHEELS (Welfare, Health, Education, Environment, Livelihood, and Sustainability); and one of the four pillars of under his "The Way Forward" agenda as announced in his State of the City Address (SOCA) recently.
The three-hectare Iloilo Tree Park Development Project is in the works in Brgy. Lanit, Jaro which is part of the interconnected network of greening projects. The project will feature an arboretum or botanical garden that will showcase a collection of different species of native trees and shrubs, as well as an activity center for the indigenous people of Panay, the Ati.
Other tree parks and beach forests that are being developed in the city include:
- The Beach Forest along the coast of Barangay Boulevard, Molo
- The Mangrove Eco-Park at Hinactacan, La Paz
- The Tree Park Network Project in Molo, La Paz and Jaro
The city government is also conducting regular tree planting drives and clean-ups in these areas to promote native trees and to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The development of tree parks and beach forests is a major step towards making Iloilo City a more sustainable and livable city. These projects will help to improve air quality, reduce flooding, and provide a habitat for wildlife. They will also help to educate the public about the importance of trees and the need to protect the environment.
Iloilo City is leading the way in the fight against climate change. By developing tree parks and beach forests, the city is making a significant contribution to the global effort to protect our planet.
