The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) turned over training packs for sediment quality monitoring in marine fish farms to local government units (LGUs) in Panay.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sheila Mae Santander- de Leon, director of the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology, CFOS, led the turnover activity last December 14, 2022, via Zoom. The training packs were given to the LGUs of the provinces of Capiz, Aklan, Guimaras, and Iloilo. The activity was in collaboration with the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS).
CFOS Dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap and Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Prof. Harold M. Monteclaro graced the virtual event.
The training materials contain the following: 1) lectures on various topics on marine fish farming and its effects on the marine environment, monitoring sediment quality in marine fish farms using indicators, guide to photo-documentation, and guide to focus group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII) for sediment quality monitoring in marine fish farms; 2) workshop materials such as action plan for monitoring sediment quality and FGD and KII guide questionnaires; 3) video guides on observation of sediment quality indicators in marine fish farms, measurement of reduction-oxidation (Redox) potential, and collection of sediments using Van-Veen Grab; and 4) field guides to the observation of sediment quality indicators, sediment collection using Grab Sampler, photo documentation, and qualitative data collection and conduct of focus group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII).
The training packs were produced as a result of the series of Trainer’s Training on Sediment Quality Monitoring in Marine Fish Farms that CFOS organized this year for four training sites in the aforementioned provinces this year.
The training series was conducted last February 14-18, 2022, for LGUs in Capiz; March 14-15, 2022, for Aklan; June 16-17, 2022, for Iloilo; and June 22-23, 2022, for the LGUs in Guimaras. The training in Iloilo was also participated in by representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and feed companies.
The undertaking benefited a total of 58 participants, 34 of which were female and 24 male.
The trainer’s training was aimed to educate the enablers on the importance of sustainable aquaculture; impart skills on sediment quality monitoring in marine fish farms; capacitate trainees on how to use the field guide, samplers, and instruments; and to train the participants to become future trainers to relay the knowledge and skills to their constituents.
The recipients were grateful to the training modules hoping that these could help the LGUs and the trainees, coupled with their learnings from the training, in monitoring sediment quality in marine fish farms in their respective areas of responsibilities as well as in conducting similar training to their constituents in the future.
